Michigan State Football Secondary Coach Comments on Junior's New Position

Spartan Safety Xavier Henderson Moving to Cornerback

Coach Harlon Barnett Praises Henderson's Versatility and Athleticism

Michigan State football secondary coach Harlon Barnett has expressed confidence in junior safety Xavier Henderson's ability to make the switch to cornerback for the upcoming season.

Henderson, a former four-star recruit, has primarily played safety during his first two seasons with the Spartans. However, Barnett believes that Henderson's athleticism and versatility make him an ideal candidate to fill the void left by departing cornerback Kalon Gervin.

"Xavier is a very talented player who can play multiple positions in the secondary," Barnett said. "He's a physical presence with great instincts and ball skills. We're excited to see what he can do at cornerback."

Henderson has embraced the challenge of moving to a new position. He has been working hard in the offseason to improve his technique and footwork. He is confident that he can make a smooth transition to cornerback.

"I'm ready to play wherever the coaches need me," Henderson said. "I'm excited about the opportunity to learn a new position and contribute to the team's success."

Henderson's move to cornerback is a sign of the Spartans' defensive depth. Michigan State has several talented players who can play multiple positions in the secondary. This versatility gives Barnett the flexibility to adjust his defensive scheme based on the opponent's strengths and weaknesses.

The Spartans are expected to have a strong defense in 2023. They return several key players from last season's team that finished 11-2. Henderson's move to cornerback could make the Spartans' defense even more formidable.
