The Most Dangerous Asteroids: Probability of Impact and Destructive Power
The Remnants of Solar System Creation
Asteroids are remnants of the creation of our solar system. They are composed of rock, metal, or a mixture of both. Most asteroids are found in the asteroid belt, a region of space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. However, some asteroids are found in orbits that bring them close to Earth.
The 5 Most Dangerous Asteroids
NASA has identified 32,000 asteroids that are close to Earth. Of these, 5 are considered to be the most dangerous:
- Bennu
- Apophis
- 2005 ED224
- Tutuatis
- 2012 TC4
Probability of Impact
The probability of an asteroid impacting Earth is very small. However, it is not zero. Scientists estimate that there is a 1 in 100,000 chance of an asteroid larger than 1 kilometer in diameter impacting Earth in the next 100 years.
Destructive Power
The destructive power of an asteroid impact depends on the size and composition of the asteroid, as well as the location of impact. A large asteroid impact could cause widespread damage and loss of life. For example, an asteroid impact that occurred in Tunguska, Russia, in 1908, flattened 80 million trees and caused widespread damage. An asteroid impact near a major city could cause even more devastating damage.
