Chelsea reach Women's League Cup final after thrilling encounter with Man City

Blues edge City 1-0 in semi-final second leg to secure final berth

Reiten equalises for Chelsea against 9-player City

Chelsea secured their place in the Women's League Cup final for the fifth season running after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the second leg of their semi-final on Friday. The Blues, who lost the first leg 1-0 at home, needed to overturn the deficit at the Academy Stadium and did so thanks to a first-half goal from Guro Reiten. City, who had been reduced to nine players after the dismissals of Alex Greenwood and Laura Coombs, fought valiantly but Chelsea held on to secure their place at Wembley. First half Chelsea started the game brightly and should have taken the lead in the opening minutes when Sam Kerr found herself through on goal, but she fired wide. City gradually grew into the game and began to create chances of their own, with Khadija Shaw proving to be a handful for the Chelsea defence. However, it was Chelsea who took the lead in the 22nd minute when Reiten curled a superb free-kick into the top corner. City responded well to going behind and came close to equalising on several occasions, but Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was in inspired form. Second half The second half continued in the same vein, with both teams creating chances to score. City were dealt a blow in the 65th minute when Greenwood was sent off for a second bookable offence. And their task became even more difficult 10 minutes later when Coombs was also shown a red card. Chelsea took advantage of their numerical advantage and pushed for a second goal, but City held firm to keep the deficit to one. The Blues will now face Manchester United in the final at Wembley on Saturday, March 11.
